Brazil: Rhodia Plans Nylon Intermediates Boost in Brazil

/Apparel - Textile PR News/ - MUMBAI, INDIA, June 14, 2007 - Rhodia says it will invest Eu30 million to increase production of phenol and cyclohexanol at Paulinia, Brazil. The project entails a 25% increase in phenol and acetone capacities, and a 43% increase in cyclohexanol capacity, Rhodia says. The company says demand is growing about 5%-6%/year, driven by demand for nylon and phenolic resins in Latin America. The expansion will "strengthen its leadership position in the regional intermediates market and reinforce its upstream integrated polyamide chain," Rhodia says. The increased capacity is due onstream by the end of 2008. Rhodia's nylon business reported sales of Eu922 million in 2006, a 12.4% increase over the previous year, and the company has several other capacity hikes planned or under construction. It is planning to invest in nylon intermediates in China, which will include a 60,000- m.t./year hexamethylene diamine plant due for completion in early 2009. The company says it is also studying plans to build an adiponitrile plant in Asia.
Rhodia is also building a Euro40-million polymerization unit at Onsan to produce 48,000 m.t./year of nylon-6,6 for completion at the end of 2007.
